In the Name of God
“There is a cave upon the hill,
Where the rivers freeze and the air is chill
It is there that I reside,
Go there to find God by your side.”
The words of the sage ring in his ears,
He sets on a journey, despite the fading years
Putting on a turban and a coat
He leaves without farewells or a goodbye note.
“I will return”, he tells the crumbling walls
A promised as fragile as the clay dolls
Crushing the snow under his feet
The cold outside is matched by his heat.
Days turn into nights, winter into spring
He walks on, his hope dangling by a string
Finally, from the mist emerges the cave
He feels like a king, a man who was once a slave.
He reaches the doorstep, expecting an enlightened view
All he faces is darkness, a scene Hades himself drew
The figure of the sage appears, by a shivering candlelight
In his hand lies a gun- what an ironic sight.
The innocent eyes of the boy widen, his soul feels so laden
The face of the sage no longer seems Divine
His voice echoes – “Sacrifice your life for the greater
cause,
Many others wait in line.”
The voice of his mother calls him back,
Another childhood has been painted black
A thought so foolish, a belief so odd
Carrying a gun in the name of god.
