The Sacrifice
As the sun rays broke through the clouds,
Signalling the birth of a new day
A soft prayer escaped his lips
“Protect me Allah, come what may.”
After the rooster provided the morning alarm
His trembling hands grew so calm
In it was a knife so sharp
Beckoning him like the notes of a harp.
I know not, who will be the sacrifice
An attempt to purify a heart of lies
Will it be me- the mute with no words?
Will it be you- the orphan with no cords?
You and me, one black and one white
Our survival has been a fight
I wonder if our colour will decide our fate
Give us love or hand us hate.
His knife comes down, and he whispers
“One last wish, before you wither?”
I have no wishes, I have no wants
Only peace and a thought-
I’m going to a place where I belong,
Where my skin colour won’t silence my song.
